•   What:  A series of four classes for students with a little (or very little) knowledge of Spanish.  Excellent for those with long-ago high school Spanish or those who just completed my OLLI Jumpstart 1A class.

•   When:  1 pm-2:30 pm.  4 Tuesdays: Jan. 31, Feb 7, Feb. 14, Feb. 21.

•   Where:  At my house in Ashland.  Email me with your name and phone number at Teri@SpanishByStories.com or leave a comment on this site with your phone number and I'll call you with directions.

•    Cost:  $60 for the series of four classes (flat rate), payable at the first class.

•    How many students:  Between 5 and 9 people.  If fewer than 5 sign up, I'll call you to discuss options.

 CUENTO DOS:  ¿El puente o el gato?

Hay una chica- There is a girl,

     Hay una chica muy triste.  Ella está triste porque quiere tener el Puente Golden Gate.  Va a visitar a un amigo que se llama Brad Pitt en Puerto Vallarta, México. 

Ella le dice:--Brad, ¿tienes tú el puente Golden Gate?

Brad le dice:--Lo siento, amiga.  No tengo el puente Golden Gate.  El puente es público.

La chica llora un poco.  Brad le dice:--Tengo un gato negro y bonito.  ¿Quieres tener mi gato?

--Sí, por favor.  Tú eres muy amable.  Muchas gracias.

Brad le da el gato y la chica sonríe.  Un gato es más importante que el Puente Golden Gate.

 La princesa misteriosa y dos hombres guapos.

     La mujer se sienta sola en un restaurante pequeño y popular en Guanajuato, México.  Ella es una princesa de Aragón, en el norte de España.  Es muy bonita y elegante.  Es misteriosa y habla cuatro lenguas: italiano, estonio, inglés y español. 

     Un hombre alto, moreno y guapo mira a la mujer. Se llama Antonio. Sonríe a la mujer.  El se levanta y camina despacio hacia la princesa.  Pero la princesa no mira al hombre.  Ella mira a otro hombre que se llama Johnny.  El otro hombre se levanta y camina rápido hacia la mujer.  Ella le sonríe a él y se levanta y camina despacio hacia él.  El hombre besa a la princesa.   Ella camina con el hombre guapo a un taxi.  Buenas noches.

   Un hombre mira a una mujer.  La mujer es muy guapa.  El hombre quiere hablar con la mujer.  Camina hacia la mujer.  El hombre no le habla. ¿Por qué no le habla?  Porque es tímido.  El hombre la mira y sonríe.  La mujer no lo mira.  La mujer mira a otro hombre. ¡Ay, no!  La mujer habla con el otro hombre.  La mujer se levanta y camina con el otro hombre.  

Cuento Uno - Lectura extendida

Hay un hombre alto y guapo que se llama Miguel.  Mira a una mujer muy guapa en un café en la Plaza Mayor de Madrid.  Ella se llama Penélope Cruz. La mujer toma una copa de jerez (sherry) y come calamares fritos.  Miguel quiere hablar con Penélope.   Camina despacio hacia la mujer bonita, pero no le habla.  ¿Por qué no le habla a la mujer?  Porque Miguel es muy tímido.  Miguel sonríe y mira a ella, pero Penélope no mira a Miguel.  Mira a otro hombre bajo y gordo.  ¡Oh no! Ella habla con el otro hombre. 

Le dice:--Hola, guapo.  Me llamo Penélope.  ¿Cómo te llamas?

Él le dice:--Hola, Penélope.  Mucho gusto.  Me llamo Jack Black.

Ella se levanta y camina con el hombre bajo y gordo.  Miguel está muy triste.

 

¡Próspero Año Nuevo!

I hope you wore yellow on New Year's Eve!  In Perú, it is The Color to use in clothing and decorations to assure a happy and prosperous New Year.  I remember buying yellow underwear for the occasion at the mercado in 2008 and seeing lots of decorations all over in yellow.

The next celebration coming up is la Fiesta de los Reyes Magos, or Los Tres Reyes, on January 6.  This is traditionally the Spanish day for exchanging gifts. Children would be on the lookout for camels, not reindeer. This is the day on which the Reyes arrived at Bethlehem to honor the newborn king.
This time is nowadays being usurped or supplemented in some places by the Santa Claus type tradition in which Christmas Eve or Day is gift-giving time.  The traditional food is a "rosca de reyes", a large ring-shaped pastry that has baked into it a small figurine of the Christ Child.  The lucky person who finds it has the honor of giving a party on Feb. 2, el Día de la Candalaria.
