Intermediate Spanish at OLLI:  Fall, 2016

Our current class started Sept. 14, 2016 at OLLI, Campbell Center, Room C.  For notes, see the tab "Current OLLI Class."  It will take place every Wednesday and Friday till October 7.

Continuing Spanish "Beginners Plus"  (from OLLI Class, Winter 2016)

Four students are taking a class together, Wednesdays, 3 pm, March 23-April 13, 2016.

¿A qué hora llegaron ustedes al teatro?

--Yo llegué a las doce porque a mi me gusta llegar temprano.  Salí de mi casa a las diez porque  antes fui al peluquero porque necesitaba un corte de pelo.  Mi estilista es un hombre simpático pero no muy guapo.

--Llegué un poco más tarde, a la una menos quince, porque fui al salón de belleza para una cita con la manicura.

--Llegué a las doce y media.  Tenía una clase en OLLI sobre los cuentos cortos.

--Yo llegué a la una menos cinco.

--No llegué, no le llamé a la profesora, no contesté mi teléfono.  ¿Por qué?

iba a cenar - used to go out to eat dinner, went out to dinner

nos vemos - see you (We will see each other) 

pues - well...

pedir - to ask for, or order (food),  to "petition" (Grammar alert: watch the stem change from e to i)

     Present tense:  yo pido, tú pides, él pide, nosotros pedimos, vosotros pedís, ellos piden

     Preterite tense (completed action in the past):

     yo pedí, tú pediste, él pidió, nosotros pedimos, vosotros pedísteis, ellos pidieron

Un chico llamado Don Quixote Sancho Panza Miguel era joven y muy guapo.  Vivía en Ginebra, Suiza.  Todos los días DQSPM jugaba al tenis con su amigo Roger Federer.  Ellos jugaban siete horas por día.  Por las noches DQSPM iba a cenar en los restaurantes finos de la ciudad con sus amigos y amigas.  Pobre DQSPM no tenía tiempo para trabajar. 

Pero él tenía un problema serio.  Estaba aburrido con su vida.  Quería viajar a un país nuevo, un país diferente, un país tropical con chicas bonitas, música excelente, gobierno comunista y ron fantástico.  Quería viajar a Cuba.

Pero, estaba preocupado porque no tenía bastante dinero.  Decidió pedir el dinero a sus amigos.  Primero fue a la casa de Roger.  

Le dijo:--Roger, tú eres un amigo bueno.  Tú eres muy rico.  ¿Me das dinero para viajar a Cuba?

Roger le contestó:--No, amigo.  Tú siempre me estás pidiendo dinero.  Siempre te doy dinero para una cena elegante o un baile especial.   Estoy aburrido de tus problemas.  No te voy a dar más dinero.

DQSPM le dijo:--Está bien, amigo.  No hay problema.  Nos vemos en la cancha de tenis mañana.

Entonces él fue a su amiga Cher.  Vanya era una chica rica y simpática y generosa.  

Él le dijo:--Cher, ¿cómo estás hoy?  Estás muy guapa en ese vestido.

--Gracias, DQSPM.  ¿Cómo estás tú?

--Quiero viajar a Cuba.  Es un país muy interesante y romántico, pero no tengo bastante dinero.  ¿Me das dinero, por favor? porque quiero viajar a Cuba.

 Le dijo:--¿Conmigo?-- Cher estaba emocionada. -- Claro que sí.  ¿Cuánto cuesta el viaje?

--Pues, si hacemos un viaje romántico y elegante, va a costar siete mil quinientos ochenta y seis dólares.

Cher respondió:--Muy bien.  ¿Cuándo salimos?

Una chica que se llamaba Candie vivía en Guanajuato, México.  Ella tenía catorce años y pronto iba a cumplir los quince.  Estaba muy emocionada.  Ella quería tener un vestido más elegante que el vestido de su amiga Ana.  Ana compró su vestido de quinceañera en el mercado y no era muy caro.  Ana era pobre.  Pero Candie no era una chica pobre.  No era rica tampoco, pero quería comprar un vestido más bonito que el vestido de Ana.

Un día Candie fue a Nordstrom's con su abuelita Corita, su mamá, sus tres hermanas, sus siete primas y sus cuatro tías.  La abuelita Corita iba a pagar el vestido para Candie porque Candie era su nieta favorita.

La dependiente de Nordstrom's se les acercó.  Ella les sonrió y le dijo a la abuelita Corita:--¿Qué se le ofrece?  La prima Julie quería contestar, pero no dijo nada por respeto a Abuelita.
Abuelita Corita le respondió:--Queremos un vestido elegante y bonito para mi nieta Candie, para su quinceañera.

--Sí, señora.  Ahorita les muestro los vestidos para quinceañeras.

NEW small group class scheduled!
Starts Nov. 18, 2014, for advanced beginners/low intermediates. 
We'll have 4 or 5 sessions, 1.5 hrs each one, 3:00-4:30 pm.  Dates are Nov. 18, 20, (possibly Nov. 25), Dec. 2, Dec. 4.
$60-$75 for the series, depending on that pre-Thanksgiving class, or $15 each session.

2014 Spring Term OLLI class, "Getting to Intermediate" FINISHED

This class is currently in progress. It ends on May 8.  If you'd like to join us for the last few classes, there is still room.  Contact me if you're interested.

2014 OLLI Winter term class:  Beginners Plus
FINISHED
Starts Tuesday, Jan. 7!  Apparently the class is now full, but check for last-minute cancellations.  And keep checking- people sometimes drop early in the course after realizing it doesn't meet their needs or for other reasons.

OLLI Beginners class in October, 2012  -- EXTENDED TO NOV. 8, 2102! FINISHED


We have added two more classes to the Fall 2012 Beginners' Class at OLLI in Ashland.  They will be at the same time and place, OLLI Room D, Tuesday and Thursday, 9 - 10:30.  The new dates will be November 6 and 8.  So instead of ending as planned on Nov. 1, our last date will be Nov. 8. If you are in the class now, I hope you will continue for the two extra sessions.  If not, and you already do know a little Spanish, there may still be room to sign up.  Check at the office.

The CURRENT beginners class HAD BEEN scheduled for  eight sessions, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9-10:30, starting October 9, 2012 and ending November 1 (el día de los muertos) (pura casualidad).  Most students will likely have some knowledge of Spanish, or even be brand new to the language.

This class is not intended for students at intermediate level or higher, but those who have taken previous beginning level classes are welcome to return.  We always have new stories!

New class in progress, ending Aug. 3! FINISHED

A new class for intermediate students is scheduled for the last week in July-first of August.  There will be three sessions, 2 hours each one, on Monday, July 30 
Wednesday, August 1 and
Friday, August 3, 2012. 
Each class will be from 3:00-5:00 pm.

The three classes together cost $60.  Location may be at my house or elsewhere in Ashland.

   Another idea!
Some people have suggested a once-a-month class session to keep up skills and interest.  This might work out; let's discuss it.

                                            
   Summer at OLLI at SOU: FINISHED Intensive intermediate class scheduled for June:

Four sessions, 3:30-6:00 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 20, 22, 27, 29.

Planned to be slightly more advanced than the last class.  You should be conversant in Spanish and have some familiarity with past tenses.

FINISHED:  LAST class at OLLI at SOU:  Spring Term 2012.

April 10 - May 3, 3:30 - 5 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
     This class is designed for beginners with some knowledge of Spanish, not for serious intermediates or advanced students.  We will go slowly, but it will be fun.

Clases Particulares / Private or small group lessons

No classes are scheduled yet for spring, but there's a good chance we could continue with the advanced beginners-low intermediates group.

 FINISHED:  Winter 2012: Spanish 1B, for beginners

•   What:  A series of four classes for students with a little (or very little) knowledge of Spanish.  Excellent for those with long-ago high school Spanish or those who just completed my OLLI Jumpstart 1A class.

•   When:  1 pm-2:30 pm.  4 Tuesdays: Jan. 31, Feb 7, Feb. 14, Feb. 21.

•   Where:  At my house in Ashland.  Email me with your name and phone number at Teri@SpanishByStories.com or leave a comment on this site with your phone number and I'll call you with directions.

•    Cost:  $60 for the series of four classes (flat rate), payable at the first class.

•    Limited to  between 5 and 9 people.  If fewer than 5 sign up, I'll call you to discuss options.
